However, the top of the gadget is blighted by the plastic volume control, mute button, and action button. Because voice controls can be fussy if music is too loud for them, I’m grateful for their existence, but Amazon might have done a better job of disguising them.
As far as I can tell, Amazon’s smart speakers have always had a distinct edge over their Google counterparts: the 3.5inline input/output jack. To put it another way, you can either use Dot’s audio output directly or connect it to a better-sounding device through a USB cable.
When compared to earlier models, the third-generation Echo Dot represented a big step forward for the company. But only because there was no pressing need for improvement in the fourth generation version. Our favorite compact smart speaker is now much better looking and sounds better at the same low price as before. It’s true Alexa isn’t Google Assistant, but it’s still a good thing to have in your life. When you factor in Amazon’s AI butler as an added perk, this speaker is a no-brainer for me as a great value for the money. Purchasing the clock version for an additional ten dollars makes it much better.
Comparison
There is no surprise that the fourth-generation Echo Dot costs the same amount as the third-generation model, which was originally priced at just £50. The LED clock adds £10 to the £60 price tag. The clock version of last year’s model appears to have been discontinued, although it is still available for £40.
The Nest Mini, which is also £50, is the primary rival for this product. It features Google Assistant, which is far superior, but no line-out port, so the only choice is the somewhat ropey speaker that comes with it.
You can get a full-sized 2020 Echo and Nest Audio for £90 if you don’t mind spending an extra £40. You’ll get better sound quality for your money, but you’ll also have to deal with a much larger footprint.
