Then there’s the matter of availability. Finding the Flex 5’s setup choices took longer than I expected. The IdeaPad Flex 5 14ITL05 has been discontinued, according to Lenovo’s website. Although the laptop is still available from various vendors, the configuration examined, which included an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD, is almost extinct.
The closest thing I could locate has 12GB of RAM and was $649 at Staples. Other options include AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i3 processors, 4GB to 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. These various configurations range in price from $499 to $679, depending on which merchant goes.
Design
The IdeaPad Flex 5’s design isn’t unusual or spectacular, but it’s not horrible either. It’s elegant with a charcoal grey metal covering on the front and the Lenovo logo inlay in the top-right corner. A 14-inch display with relatively narrow bezels when you open the laptop. The camera is located in the middle of the top bezel and is controlled by a convenient slider that opens and closes the actual webcam cover. A lovely soft-touch plastic covers the deck’s surfaces, making typing more comfortable. Between two front-facing speakers is the keyboard. A central touchpad sits underneath the keyboard, with the fingerprint scanner on the right. Another Lenovo logo may be seen on the bottom right, immediately below the scanner. When we turn the system over, we see another plain grey plastic design. The laptop has a large vent in the middle for ventilation and rubber stoppers to keep it from sliding about on a flat surface.
A hinge that is too stiff or too loose can ruin a laptop, especially a hybrid. Thankfully, the IdeaPad Flex 5 achieved an excellent balance of durability and flexibility. Open the computer with one hand without difficulty, and switching to tablet mode was always a breeze. However, the hinge was strong enough to support the tablet in tent mode.
Five ports
The Flex 5 has many connectors for a mid-range laptop. Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and a complete SD card reader are located on the right side, both of which are helpful but becoming more uncommon.
A 3.5mm headphone connector, USB Type-C input, HDMI, and an AC power connection are all located on the laptop’s left side. While the computer has an AC connector, the charger that comes with it only has a USB-C port. I plan on using the USB-C connection to charge this laptop; a USB-C hub would be a wise investment.
Display
The 14-inch, 1080p display seemed bright and contrasting at first sight. Then, even with the screen’s most colourful setting, I brought it outdoors and couldn’t see anything.
The greens on the Time Square digital displays and the flora in parks were brilliant when viewing the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, but the reds of Spider-suit Man only showed out when he was the only figure on the screen; otherwise, he got lost in the crowds.
The color coverage in the Avatar:
Frontiers of Pandora game trailer was a little better; the blues and purples were bright and vivid, but the reds and oranges were still muted. The display brightness of the IdeaPad Flex 5 achieved just 200 nits in our testing, which is low than the mainstream laptop average of 290 nits and the Envy x360 13.
It navigates around online sites using the screen rather than the trackpad since it is snappy and intuitive. Lenovo had included a pen with this device, however.
Keyboard and touchpad
More than anything else, getting used to the reduced size of the keyboard takes some time. It was prepared to be thrown off rhythm by a more shallow keyboard since it generally uses a mechanical keyboard for daily operations. Instead, it was pleasantly delighted by the Flex 5’s comfortable typing experience. Yes, the keyboard was shallower, but the keys were actuated with a satisfying tactile click. The touchpad has a plasticky feel, but it’s still relatively smooth and offers minimal resistance when gliding fingertips over it. Every movement on the touchpad translated as rapidly as it did on the touchscreen, and both the right and left clicks offered just enough tactile feedback.
Audio
The speakers generated full, rich tones that pleasantly pleased me even at maximum power—the complete harmonies and how one part never dominated the other when listening to the Solar Power album. The speakers can be hear from across the room, and they can even draw out ambient coffee shop noise.
Performance
The IdeaPad Flex 5 is a quiet worker with an 11th Generation Intel CPU and 16GB of RAM. Before detecting any slowness, I had 25 tabs open in Microsoft Edge, half of which included YouTube videos, Twitch streams, and BBC videos. Even yet, the slowdowns weren’t enough to be bothersome. Although it was still pretty useable, the laptop began working when I reached 35 tabs.
Graphics
The Flex 5 offers ample power for picture and video editing thanks to Intel Iris Xe integrate graphics, which are also included in laptops like the ThinkPad X13, Envy 13, and Surface Pro 7+. Anything that requires greater graphics power should be avoided on this device.
Battery life
This laptop lasted 14 hours and 16 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, which entails continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits. That’s more than five hours longer than the 9:16 average for mainstream laptops and hours longer.
Webcam
While the age of Covid video conversations is fading, having an HD webcam is a pleasant addition for individuals who work or study from home. The IdeaPad Flex 5’s 720p webcam does the job. The few selfies I shot had good contrast and weren’t too saturated. But there was some blooming, and the photos were blurry. This camera isn’t ideal for streamers, but it’ll be enough for ordinary video chatting. Additionally, the actual camera shutter provides extra security.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is hot
Thankfully, the IdeaPad Flex 5 does not overheat while working hard. It reached 76 degrees Fahrenheit on the touchpad and 87 degrees on the keyboard after playing a 15-minute 1080p movie in fullscreen mode. The bottom temperature reached 94 degrees, which is still cold enough to keep your thighs from overcooking. It’s only a few degrees shy of our 95-degree comfort zone.
Software and warranty
Lenovo Hotkeys was the first of these programs, and it’s a resource for learning and modifying the shortcuts assigned to different function keys. Lenovo Pen Settings is only applicable if you add a stylus to your setup; it displays the battery % of your pen and allows you to customize the pen tip feel and the shortcuts assigned to its two-barrel buttons. If you want to designate it as a shortcut on these two buttons, you may also configure a radial menu.
Finally, Lenovo Vantage is an app that gathers all of the information about your device in one location. It functions as a control panel providing quick access to information about your unique device.
